WARTALES | NEW COMMUNITY UPDATE IS HEADING FOR SEPTEMBER
Wartales is preparing another substantial free Community Update, with September currently shaping up as the window in which Shiro Games will deliver the next round of changes to its open-world mercenary RPG. Years after release, the game has settled into the kind of long-term rhythm that suits it especially well, with new regions and paid expansions arriving alongside smaller free updates that keep the underlying systems moving forward. That steady support matters in Wartales more than it would in a shorter, more linear RPG, because a single mercenary campaign can stretch across dozens of hours and expose every repetitive battle setup, management inconvenience and rough edge along the way. The developer’s official 2026 roadmap places the update in Q3 and, more importantly, makes clear that this will not be a simple maintenance patch built around a handful of fixes. The focus is once again on community feedback, something that has become a regular part of Wartales’ post-launch development, with Shiro using these updates to adjust systems that players interact with for dozens or even hundreds of hours. The confirmed feature list includes new battle maps, additional colour variations for craftable armour, quality-of-life settings and improvements, alongside performance work, optimizations and fixes. It is a fairly practical package rather than a flashy expansion, but that fits Wartales unusually well: this is a game whose long campaigns benefit as much from better variety and smoother underlying systems as they do from entirely new regions or questlines.

more battle maps where repetition matters most
New battle maps may end up being the most immediately noticeable addition. Wartales asks players to fight frequently as their mercenary company travels between contracts, exploration objectives and larger regional storylines, so battlefield variety has a direct effect on how repetitive a long campaign can feel. Shiro has already used previous Community Updates to expand and refine combat Community Update 5, for example, introduced new road battle maps alongside AI changes, morale adjustments, balancing and bug fixes and the upcoming update appears to continue that approach rather than rebuild combat from scratch. More environments should give positioning, movement and engagement decisions a little more room to breathe, especially for established parties whose builds and preferred tactical routines have already settled into place. The update’s armour-colour variations are much smaller mechanically, but they answer another obvious long-term request by giving crafted equipment more visual flexibility and making it easier to give a large company a more coherent identity instead of looking like everyone raided a different armoury five minutes before the battle.

community feedback remains part of the development loop
The emphasis on player feedback is not new marketing language attached to this particular patch. Wartales’ Community Update structure has repeatedly been used for changes requested by players, stretching back through earlier updates that added or reworked systems rather than simply dropping new paid content into the game. Shiro’s current roadmap explicitly describes the Q3 update as being focused on community-driven changes, while previous updates have addressed AI behaviour, core systems, balancing, performance and interface conveniences. That matters for a game of Wartales’ scale because some of its rougher edges only become obvious after a campaign has been running for a very long time: combat frequency, troop management, inventory work, progression and the general friction of maintaining a growing mercenary band all accumulate over time. A Community Update built around reducing those irritations may sound less dramatic than another DLC announcement, but it can have a larger effect on the hours players spend between the headline moments.

2026 is not finished with Wartales
The free Community Update is also only the middle piece of Wartales’ 2026 schedule. Shiro already released the Contract: Fires in the Capital DLC in April, which took the mercenary company into Edoran’s capital amid civil disorder, and the studio’s roadmap reserves Q4 for the considerably larger annual Expansion DLC. That expansion is planned to introduce units on horseback together with a new region, champion, weapons and armour, making the quieter Community Update an interesting bridge between two larger content drops. Three years after Wartales left Early Access in April 2023, Shiro is therefore still supporting the game through a mixture of paid expansions and free systemic improvements rather than treating the base game as finished and simply stacking DLC on top of it. For players already deep into a campaign, September’s update looks less like a reason to start over and more like an attempt to make the company they already have better to manage, better to look at and a little less predictable once steel is drawn.
